Court Grants Bail to Social Media Critic, Abubakar Adamu, After 40 Days Detention

The Federal High Court, Kaduna, has granted bail to a social media critic, Abubakar Adamu, after over 40 days in detention.

Adamu was arrested by the Department of Security Service, DSS, for a social media post allegedly calling for the elimination of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The post was sensitive to violent uprising in the North at the time it was made, essentially, at the height of the U.S./Israel tension in Iran. The DSS was on red alert to avert outburst of violence and breakdown of law and order in the country.

The DSS's actions have been criticized for stifling dissent and intimidating citizens from expressing themselves freely. Adamu's detention is seen as a test case for freedom of expression in Nigeria, with many calling for his immediate release and the dropping of charges against him.
