Senate Issues Ultimatum to Defaulting Agencies On Audit Queries
The Senate Committee on Public Accounts has issued a fresh ultimatum to the heads of several government agencies with unresolved audit issues, directing them to appear before the committee or face sanctions.
Chairman of the Committee, Senator Ibrahim Dankwambo, gave the warning during a committee session reviewing responses from agencies with outstanding audit queries raised by the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation.
One of the agencies under scrutiny, the Bank of Agriculture, stated in a letter to the committee that all outstanding issues had been resolved with both the committee and the Auditor-General.
The bank, however, requested additional time to enable its newly appointed Managing Director to collate relevant documents and provide a comprehensive response.
Responding to the request, Senator Dankwambo maintained that the committee would communicate all outstanding issues to the affected agencies within one week, warning that failure to appear and provide satisfactory explanations would attract appropriate sanctions.
Lawmakers, who spoke during the session, stressed the need for accountability and transparency in the management of public institutions, insisting that all agencies invited by the committee must honour the summons.
The agencies affected by the directive include the Bank of Agriculture and the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company, among others.
