Northern Groups Raise Alarm Over Plateau Killings

The Coalition of Northern Groups has raised alarm over rising insecurity in northern Nigeria. The group warned against attempts to exploit ethnic and religious divisions, as well as the involvement of foreign actors, to destabilize the North.

The group condemned recent attacks in Plateau State and Kaduna State, including the killing of at least 14 people in Anguwan Rukuba in Jos North Local Government Area, and another attack on a wedding gathering in Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State, where 13 persons were reportedly killed and several others abducted.

The Coalition, in a statement by the National Coordinator, Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, described the deliberate targeting of civilians as a grave assault on humanity and called for collective condemnation.

The Coalition also cautioned against retaliatory actions, warning that reprisals, mob violence and identity-based profiling, could further escalate tensions and deepen divisions within affected communities.

It called on religious leaders, community influencers and opinion leaders to exercise restraint and avoid inflammatory statements capable of worsening the situation.

The Coalition further warned against the activities of foreign actors and non-state elements allegedly exploiting existing fault lines to advance destabilising agenda. The National Coordinator urged vigilance against manipulation of local conflicts.

The Coalition urged both federal and state governments to take decisive actions in protecting lives and property, noting that the recurring attacks highlight gaps in intelligence, coordination and proactive security measures.

It also called on security agencies to ensure that perpetrators are apprehended and brought to justice, while restoring public confidence through effective and accountable operations.

The group expressed solidarity with victims and their families, urging citizens to remain calm, law-abiding and united against forces threatening peace and stability in the region.
