Advocacy Group Petition International Bodies Over FCT Minister's Actions
A Civil Advocacy Group, Nigeria Unite, has petitioned the United States, United Kingdom, European Union and other international bodies over what it described as the role of the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, in Nigeria’s democratic decline.
In a statement by its national secretariat, Sunday Daniel, the Group said the petition titled Imminent Collapse of Democracy in the Sahel Region was submitted to several foreign governments and institutions.
The Group accused Wike of using intimidation, inducement and state institutions to weaken opposition parties and influence political structures adding that Nigeria’s political climate reflects the instability spreading across the Sahel.
Nigeria Unite called for diplomatic intervention and targeted sanctions, alleging that Wike’s actions have fuelled crises within the PDP, LP and ADC and contributed to mass defections into the APC, raising fears of a drift toward a one-party state.
The group also criticised the use of public resources to lure opposition leaders and claimed that unequal resource allocation to states was weakening political competition ahead of the 2027 elections.
It said the suppression of dissent, weakened institutions and rising political pressure could worsen regional instability, stressing that Nigeria’s destabilisation would have far-reaching consequences for West Africa and beyond.
