Oil Marketers Threaten Nationwide Strike over Dangote Refinery Dispute

Petroleum Product Marketers have threatened to halt their services across Nigeria starting Tuesday, September 9, 2025, if the Federal Government does not intervene to resolve the ongoing conflict between the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and Dangote Refinery.

The dispute arises from Dangote Refinery’s plan to deploy 4,000 compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks for distributing its petroleum products nationwide.

At a joint press briefing on Monday in Abuja, leaders from the Natural Oil and Gas Suppliers Association of Nigeria (NOGASA), Petroleum Products Retail Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN), and Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) expressed support for the refinery’s growth but insisted it should not jeopardize downstream operators' businesses.

They urged Dangote to focus on efficient refinery operations while allowing other sector stakeholders to thrive. Beneth Korie, NOGASA President, warned marketers risk being pushed out if Dangote supplies directly to retailers.

PETROAN President Billy Gillis-Harry said the strike aims to protect jobs, cautioning that the plan could cause significant job losses if not stopped. Meanwhile NARTO National President Yusuf Lawal added that about 30,000 truck owners stand to lose their investments should the plan continue.
