ADC Lawmakers Demand Resignation Of INEC Chairman, Amupitan
The lawmakers of the African Development Congress, ADC caucus, in the House of Representatives, have demanded the prosecution and removal of the INEC chairman over alleged bias, warning that Nigeria’s democracy is under serious threat.
At a press conference in Abuja, Hon Ogene, who spoke on behalf of the ADC Reps caucus, accused the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Joash Amupitan, of partiality and inconsistencies that could undermine credible elections in 2027, insisting he lacks the neutrality required to serve as an impartial umpire.
The caucus cited alleged partisan social media activity linked to the INEC chairman and raised concerns over transparency and integrity, noting that conflicting claims about the ownership of the account have deepened public distrust in the electoral body and its leadership at a critical time.
The Lawmakers also accused INEC of interfering in the internal affairs of the African Democratic Congress by recognizing a disputed leadership faction, despite earlier acknowledgment of a leadership structure associated with David Mark, describing the move as an attempt to sideline the party ahead of future elections.
The caucus further alleged collusion between elements within INEC and the judiciary to influence an ongoing legal dispute, announcing plans to petition the National Judicial Council over alleged judicial compromise, while calling on Nigerians and key institutions to unite in defending democratic principles and restoring confidence in the electoral and judicial systems.
