DSS Arraigns El-Rufai In Court On Breach Of Cybercrime

The Department of Security Service, DSS, has arraigned former Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State on a five count charge relating to breach of cybercrimes.

El-Rufai was brought to the Federal High Court in Abuja by officials of the Department of State Security Service under a heavy security within and outside the court premises.

The DSS filed a five-count charge against the former Kaduna State Governor for allegedly intercepting and tapping the telephone conversation of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, thereby, violating the cybercrimes act.

The DSS accused El-Rufai of conducting illegal surveillance and security breaches while the charge rely on a February 13th, 2026, Arise TV Interview where El-Rufai allegedly disclosed intercepting the NSA's Communications.

The Amended counts include, breaches of the cybercrimes prohibition, prevention, amendment act, 2024 and the Nigeria Communications Act, 2023.

When the charge was read to the defendant, he pleaded not guilty. The Prosecution, therefore, urged the court for accelerated hearing as he needs few days to establish its case against the defendant.

The Defense Counsel raised the issue of bail which Justice Joyce Abdulmalik said will be considered at the next adjourned date, scheduled for May 18th 2026.

The charge the former Governor of Kaduna State is standing is separate from the concurrent cases instituted against him by the ICPC on alleged fraud of N11 billion during his tenure.
