FG Commissions 4 New Water Projects in Ogoni Communities

As part of the ongoing implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Report, the Federal Government has commissioned four new water projects in Ogoni communities, Bodo, Uegwere-Boue, Taabaa, and Eteo, spanning Gokana, Khana, and Eleme LGAs of Rivers State.

At the inauguration, Minister of Environment and HYPREP Chairman, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, urged communities to protect the infrastructure and emphasized the importance of local ownership for sustainability. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to public health, environmental restoration, and development in Ogoni.

Lawal also acknowledged support from community leaders, NGOs, youth groups, and Renaissance Africa Energy Limited in delivering the projects. During the visit, he commissioned HYPREP’s new Gokana Area Office and distributed energy-efficient cook stoves to local fisher folk to reduce mangrove wood usage.

HYPREP Project Coordinator, Prof. Nenibarini Zabbey, linked the initiative to President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He highlighted growing community trust and noted that HYPREP is not only providing clean water but also promoting peace building, accountability, and expanded outreach. With these latest projects, HYPREP now supplies potable water to 40 Ogoni communities, with plans to reach more by year’s end.
