Activist Petitions LDPC, NYSC, Demands Investigation Of Kalu On Law School, NYSC Certificates
A Public Interest Advocate and Human Rights Activist, Darlington Onyebuchi Agoha, has followed up a petition to the Legal Practitioners' Disciplinary Committee, LPDC, and the National Youth Service Corp, NYSC, demanding investigations into the discrepancies in the law School Attendance and NYSC discharge certificates of the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu.
He noted that the investigations are necessary in order to ensure accountability and probity in public offices.
Agoha, in a statement in Abuja, indicated that he never supported a 2023 High Court suit in Umuahia, Abia State, against Kalu, which sought to change his name; he considered it a frivolous distraction.
Agoha stated that he has joined the call for transparency regarding a more serious concern on the alleged overlap between Kalu's mandatory National Service and his full-time Law School attendance.
According to Agoha, official records suggest that Kalu's National Service (March 2010 – March 2011) overlapped with his Law School attendance (April 2010 – July 2011), which raised questions about statutory integrity.
He emphasized that Nigerian law requires strict adherence to rules, including the 70% attendance mandate of the Council of Legal Education, arguing that it is impossible to, simultaneously, fulfill both obligations.
Agoha, therefore, called for proper investigation on the matter based on the principle of fairness, equity and accountability.
