El-Rufai: Coalition Raises Alarm Over Threat To Democracy
A coalition of Arewa ADC groups has raised alarm over emerging threat to democracy in Nigeria. The Coalition protest incremental subtle autocracy of the current administration, and the hunting of opposition leaders. The Coalition, therefore, called for the release of former Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State, currently being detained over corruption allegations.
The Coalition contended that El-Rufai's detention is a threat to democracy, citing the cases of other former governors, such as Yahaya Bello of Kogi State, and Bello Matawalle of Zamfara State, who had several petitions against them but are moving freely, allegedly due to their affiliation with the ruling APC government.
The Coalition argued that the detention is selective and politically motivated, and that it undermines the principles of fairness and justice.
Leaders the Coalition demanded the release of El-Rufai and be given a fair trial, or that the charges against him be dropped, if there is insufficient evidence.
They emphasized the importance of INEC's neutrality in ensuring a level playing field for all political parties and factions. They warned against attempts to interfere with the internal affairs of the ADC. They also called on INEC to ensure a smooth and peaceful electoral process, allowing the ADC to resolve its leadership issues and move forward with its national Congress.
The coalition's statement highlights the significance of the upcoming Congress and the need for INEC's recognition of the David Mark-led faction, as the party seeks to strengthen its position and contribute to the country's democratic process.
