Retired Police Officers Mobilize For Protest At Presidential Villa

Retired police officers are mobilizing for protest at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, next Tuesday. They're unhappy that the bill to remove the Nigeria Police from the Contributory Pension Scheme, CPS, hasn't been signed into law yet. The Union of Retired Police Officers, under the CPS, said they're doing this because many retirees are struggling to survive .

The union's Kaduna State Chairman, retired Chief Superintendent of Police Mannir M. Lawal, and retired Assistant Superintendent of Police Danlami Maigamo, in a statement agitated that the union's monthly meeting was held on March 18, 2026, where members discussed their poor living conditions.

According to the statement, many retirees are living in poverty, struggling to feed themselves and their families. The union's complaint is that despite efforts to get the bill passed, it's still pending presidential approval.

A statement from the Clerk of the National Assembly, dated March 16, 2026, indicated that the President has 30 days to sign or decline the bill. Since the bill was sent to the Presidency on February 23, 2026, the deadline is March 23, 2026, the retired officers argued.

The union, therefore, urged its members across the country to participate in the planned demonstration at the Presidential Villa. They're determined to ensure the bill is signed into law, citing past setbacks.
