Reps Deepens Investigation Into Pre-Shipment Inspection Of Exports
The House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee has deepened investigation into Pre-Shipment Inspection of Exports and the Non-Remittance of Crude Oil Proceeds. The Committee, therefore, directed key government agencies to submit detailed documents on their roles in the process.
Chairman of the Committee, Seyi Sowunmi, issued the directive during a resumed investigative hearing, after submissions from the Nigeria Customs Service, Nigerian Ports Authority, Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture were considered incomplete.
Representing the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, Deputy Comptroller-General, Caroline Diagwan, explained that the Service verifies export documents such as the NXP form, export permits and certificates of inspection, and also conducts physical examination of goods before export.
Director at the Central Bank of Nigeria, Dr Musa Nakurji, representing CBN Governor Yemi Cardoso, said the apex bank coordinates trade documentation through an automated trade monitoring system which processes the NXP form and links with other agencies involved in export inspection.
Seyi Sowunmi said the investigation is aimed at addressing revenue leakages in the export chain and ensuring accountability in crude and non-oil export proceeds.
The Committee directed all agencies involved to submit comprehensive documents and will communicate new dates for their reappearance before the panel.
