Reps Committee Tightens Oversight On Maritime In 2026

The House of Representatives Committee on Maritime Safety, Education and Administration has resolved to tighten oversight of the maritime sector, insisting on clear performance targets and accountability in the 2026 budget proposals.

The committee and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, warned that weak performance will no longer be tolerated and that approvals will depend on measurable outcomes.

Chairman of the Committee, Khadija Abba-Ibrahim, at the 2026 budget defence session of NIMASA, said that heads of agencies must take responsibility for their projections and results.

NIMASA projected N724 billion budget for 2026, covering recurrent costs, capital projects, maritime security, seafarers’ development, and infrastructure upgrades.

Director-General of NIMASA, Dayo Mobereola, said the agency has automated operations and revenue collection through the MOKOSA platform to prevent leakages and improve remittances.

He added that the Cabotage Vessel Financing Fund has been relaunched under a stricter, bank-driven framework to ensure accountability.
