Ogun Customs Empowers Youths With Vocational skills To Minimize Border Crimes

The Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, Ogun I Area Command, Idiroko, has declared its readiness to explore alternative methods in combating smuggling at the border, rather than relying on force or firearms, which sometimes lead to clashes and casualties.

The border security agency stated that it will continue to empower youths in border communities with vocational skills, encouraging them to move away from smuggling, which many perceive as the only lucrative source of income in the area.

The Area Comptroller, Olukayode Afeni, at the 2026 Festival of Arts for Economic Development held in Idiroko, where the Command showcased the beneficiaries and presented certificates to the 60 empowered residents of the border communities, said the initiative was designed to create economic opportunities for residents and strengthen stability in border communities.

Also speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary of the Inter-Border Forum, the organiser of the festival, Dr. Bonny Botoku, commended the Customs Service for equipping residents with practical skills that would enhance self-reliance and help reduce crime in border areas.
