Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has approved ₦200,000 salary increase for medical doctors in the State; including ₦100,000 tax-free allowance for house officers. The governor adopted the measures to attract medical doctors and other health workers into the state.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, at a press briefing, emphasized that with the new salary scheme, entry-level doctors will now earn ₦570,000 monthly, up from ₦370,000, while house officers’ pay will rise from over ₦250,000 to above ₦350,000, under the governor’s “MORE Special Allowance” policy.

The Commissioner noted the low turnout of doctors in the ongoing recruitment of over 700 health workers, despite more than 6,000 applications received. He said the government needed to encourage medical doctors to practice in the state.
