National Boundary Commission Harps On Cross Border Collaboration To Douse Tension
The National Boundary Commission has declared its readiness to promote Cross Border Cooperation and Douse Tension regarding boundaries delineation, as well as promote mutual understanding among the people.
The Director General of the Commission, Surveyor Adamu Adaji, gave the assurance in his presentation at the Regional Meeting of the Platform for the Exchange and Coordination of Border Area Management in West Africa, PECOBOM, held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
The meeting also provided an opportunity for Nigeria to deepen engagement with stakeholders and partner institutions working towards improved cross-border governance and stability in West Africa.
Surveyor Adaji highlighted various efforts the Federal Government had initiated to curtailing boundaries dispute between Nigeria and other neighboring countries adding that Nigerians are being sensitize on daily basis on the need to promote peaceful coexistence.
He called on the government of the countries in the border areas to respect and imbibe peaceful coexistence as well as promote development.
The Director-General also participated in a panel discussion on Experience Sharing and Good Practices in Cross-Border Cooperation, where he highlighted Nigeria’s over four decades of experience and leadership in cross-border collaboration.
The Minister of Integration of the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire, Adama Dosso, who declared the meeting open, highlighted the historical complexities of African borders and underscored the importance of PECOBOM in addressing emerging security challenges in the region.
A three-Year Regional Action Plan was adopted to align border governance initiatives with regional priorities on peace, security, and enhanced cross-border cooperation.
The high-level meeting brought together Heads of National Boundary Commissions from West African countries, alongside key international organisations, including the African Union Commission, AUC, the German International Cooperation, GIZ, supporting the African Union Border Programme, the International Organization for Migration, IOM, and the International Centre for Migration Policy Development, ICMPD.
