NEDC Assures NASS of Project Completion, Gets ₦244.8bn Allocation for 2026

The North East Development Commission, (EDC, has assured the Joint Committee of the National Assembly that it will prioritise the completion of ongoing infrastructural projects and humanitarian services in the 2026 budget.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Commission, Mohammed Goni Alkali, presenting the agency’s 2026 budget proposal and defending its 2025 performance before lawmakers, disclosed that the Commission was appropriated ₦244.8 billion for 2026, with allocations distributed across key sectors.

Lawmakers commended the Commission for visible projects across the region. Senator Abdul Ningi, representing Bauchi Central, praised the MD for fostering synergy with state governors and advancing development initiatives.

He, however, called for stronger communication between the Commission and the National Assembly to enhance oversight and collaboration.

Despite acknowledging improvements in the infrastructural sector, Senator Francis Fadahunsi, representing Osun East, and Senator Iya Abbas, Adamawa Central, raised concerns over the Commission’s approach to education. They warned that high rates of out-of-school children in the region pose serious security risks, urging more strategic intervention.
